Artists Sought for New Addition to City’s Public Art Collection

Artists (and teams of artists) are invited by the city of Knoxville’s Public Arts Committee to submit their qualifications to create a permanent art piece in front of the main entrance to the State Street Garage downtown.

The State Street garage entrance has been previously decorated with temporary artistic installments, with a concrete pad and lighting installed for sculptures. The winner’s sculpture will be owned by the city and become a part of its permanent art collection.

The Public Arts Committee is looking for a meaningful, site-specific piece of art to place in this location. Whichever individual or team of artists is selected will receive up to $60,000 to complete the project. The distributed funds will include design, materials, equipment rental, site preparation, and installation.

All artists must be 18 years or older to qualify. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016. A maximum of three artists will be selected as finalists in January to propose a design. One winner will be selected from these winners in March 2017 to pursue their design on the State Street location.

Founded in September 2008, the Public Arts Committee pursues a goal of enhancing, contributing, and enriching the community through integrating art in public spaces.
