Open Streets Knoxville Will Return to Shut Down Central—Again

In The Daily Dumpster Blog by Clay Dudaleave a COMMENT

Pedals and pedestrians will again swarm huge lengths of Central Street this summer when Open Streets Knoxville returns for a second helping.

The inaugural Open Streets Knoxville event last October saw Central cordoned off to vehicle traffic from the Old City to Happy Holler as thousands of people took to the streets to bike, stroll, scooter, and yoga their way along one of this town’s major thoroughfares.

Not exactly a festival, the Open Streets concept puts a focus on physical activity and engagement, offering a host of stations, performances, and things to do alongside or in lanes of travel normally reserved for the revving and whizzing of automobiles. Last fall’s event featured hula-hooping, disc golf, yoga lessons in the street, dancing and music, face painting and hair dos, food trucks and adult beverages, some sort of magical mountain biking forest, and a ton of other things to keep you entertained. Best of all, it’s completely free to attend.

Hosted by Bike Walk Knoxville, the second rendition of the event is slated to return to Central Street from 1-6 p.m. on May 15, 2016. The official website at http://openstreetsknoxville.com hasn’t been updated yet, but there is a Facebook event for the thing, which in this day and age makes things pretty official.

Check out a few photos below from last year’s Open Streets Knoxville to get a taste of what it’s all about, and if that’s not enough we have a full gallery of Open Streets photos you can check out.

See you in the streets!
